Johnson & Johnson Grant

Location:
Friday, March 20th, 2009

Details:

The FEMAP Foundation received a generous grant from Johnson & Johnson and Cordis de Mexico. "We are eternally grateful to Johnson & Johnson and its sister corporation Cordis de Mexico," said Anna Aleman, Executive Director for the FEMAP Foundation. "The Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies has been wonderful friends and supporters of the many pediatric programs offered at the FEMAP medical units."

"Their generosity touches the lives of more than 300,000 people every year," adds Dr. Gustavo Martinez, medical director for Hospital de la Familia and Hospital Santa Maria-SADEC. "They help our doctors and nurses care for patients, heal the sick and restore the joy of good health and well-being for those in need."

The $45,000 grant will help fund the following programs:

1. Dr. Jacob Heydemann's Clinic- The clinic, which provides free services, was established 22 years ago by Dr. Heydemann and over the years has provided a total of 28,602 pediatric orthopedic consultations, 24,108 rehabilitation therapy sessions, and 754 pediatric orthopedic surgeries. Dr. Heydemann's Clinic attracts children from other municipalities in Chihuahua, as well as from the states of Coahuila, Durango, Sinaloa and Sonora.

2. Nursing School-Adjacent to Hospital de la Familia, FEMAP’s Nursing school had 400 students enrolled in 2007. Armed with the prospect of a successful career, these nurses can better care for their families and provide much needed medical services to their community. FEMAP Foundation provides nursing school scholarships.

3. Boquitas Bonitas (Cleft Palate)- Since 2001, FEMAP has provided cleft surgery at a discount to a total of 60 poor and marginalized children who otherwise would never receive it. Our doctors have been trained by American physicians from the University of Alabama and Mexican physicians from the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico and Universidad Autonoma de Cd. Juarez. This "teach a man to fish" strategy is at the core of everything FEMAP does and helps very poor but very proud communities to become self sufficient, one smile at a time.

4. Community Outreach and Prevention Programs- Through a collaboration between the Promotoras Voluntarias de Salud, FEMAP's Nursing School students, social workers and medical staff, the following community outreach programs are provided to 336,000 people:
a. Information and training through classes, workshops, talks and educational material
b.Promotoras de Salud (Community Health Workers)
c.Reproductive Health
d.Prevention and detection of cervical, breast and prostrate cancer
e.Breast feeding educational campaign
f.Immunization Campaigns
