The New FEMAP School of Nursing Receives Its First Generation Students

  Thursday, 13 Aug 2015

735 students started classes at the new FEMAP School of Nursing on Monday, August 10.  FEMAP’s School of Nursing was established on September 20, 1993 in response to a lack of nurses in the Municipality of Cd. Juarez.  It began as a one-year general nursing assistant course offered to unskilled women with few options for employment.  Within months, the school received academic certification from the National Professional Technical Education Council (CONALEP).  The number of graduates from the school rose from 20 in 1993 to 650 in 2015.  In short, the school has grown 26 times over its initial  enrollment and is now the largest nursing school in the State of Chihuahua.

In 2013, a commitment was made to construct and equip an entirely new school to meet the growing demands for an education in this field. The new School has the capacity to educate 1,000 nurses per year and thus graduate 300 nurses per year. This will result in greater professional opportunities for those seeking an education and increased medical services for those we serve. The majority of those pursuing a nursing education at FEMAP are poor – needing scholarships for the $42 per month tuition.

The new School of Nursing will ensure FEMAP continues to carry out its charitable mission of raising the quality of life among people living in poverty in our region, through health services, education, research, and economic and social empowerment.

School of Nursing:

  • It will nearly double the number of nurses that graduate every year and will be ready to move into the health sector on both sides of the border. Cd. Juarez has only 1.4 nurses per 1,000 population compared to 2.4 in Mexico, five in El Paso and 10.8 in the U.S.
  • It will be a convenient source of low cost, high quality care in a safe environment for both the people of Mexico and the U.S.  Its location near the bridge allows for a secure travel zone for patients to and from El Paso.
  • The School of Nursing consists of five levels.
  • It includes 11 classrooms, an auditorium seating 225, laboratories, a library, computer room, professors’ lounge, offices and bathrooms.  New construction will total 52,215 square feet.

The FEMAP School of Nursing,  located at General M. Rivas Guillen #658 in Colonia Centro, will be inaugurated on Friday, September 4 at 1 p.m.
