FEMAP en Conexion-Vinculacion Juvenil
The Youth Engagement Initiative (IGNITE) is part of the Paso del Norte Health Foundation’s Goal: 4: Healthy Family and Social Environment. FEMAP’s pilot program, Vinculacion Juvenil en la Comunidad de Villa del Campo en Cd. Juarez - 2014 – 2015 (Bringing Youth together in the Villa del Campo Community in Cd. Juarez) was created to provide after-school activities and meals to 210 children and youth to keep them connected to their families and communities. Villa de Campo neighborhood is a marginalized, gang-ridden colonia located in the Southwest part of Cd. Juarez. During this period the impact of the program extended reach to 442 children between the ages of 7-18 who participated in one or several of the activities that IGNITE: Vinculacion Juvenil en la Comunidad Villa del Campo en Cd. Juarez offered.
The new activities are divided in three categories PROCE (Programa Durante el Ciclo Escolar/Programs during school year), which includes homework center and tutoring, reading center, leadership lessons, sex education workshop, and sports and art clubs. PROVE (Programa de Verano/Summer programs) consisting of arts workshops, and an urban art workshop tailored (not exclusive) for youngsters who are non-students. TA (Programa Durante Todo el Año/programs throughout the year), which consists of open education program that provides an alternative education system for youth that deserted the traditional school system for any given reason, film education, two generations club tailored to strengthen parent-child relationships, youth and children Board to provide oversight of their peers, family gathering activities, and city tours.
While it is arguably more important to respond to specific health problems among youth, like smoking and poor nutrition, it is also important to implement approaches to protect youth from negative health outcomes and behaviors while promoting a high quality of life. FEMAP en Conexion in collaboration with IGNITE are gradually making a positive impact in the youth.
In 2014, the Paso del Norte Health Foundation awarded $86,274.10 to Vinculacion Juvenil en la Comunidad Villa del Campo de Cd. Juarez.
